Demystifying the Check Engine Light: What It Really Means

Few dashboard warnings cause more anxiety than the check engine light (CEL). Understanding the difference between a steady light and a flashing emergency icon helps protect your engine.

Solid Yellow Check Engine Light A steady yellow light means an emissions, fuel system, or sensor fault has been recorded by the Engine Control Module (ECM). The car is safe to drive short distances, but you should schedule a diagnostic scan promptly. Common causes include loose gas cap, failing oxygen (O2) sensor, or mass airflow (MAF) sensor contamination.

Flashing Check Engine Light [EMERGENCY] A **flashing** engine light indicates an active severe engine misfire. Unburnt fuel is entering the catalytic converter, which can melt internal catalyst elements within minutes. Pull over safely and turn off the engine immediately.
